Computer Running a Bit slow.

Ok, fishing for some ideas here guys.

My primary gaming rig has been acting up lately. Mainly my load times seem to be much slower than they should be. This is most noticeable while playing UT2K4. I'll have almost identical settings between my two computers, and even though my primary rig is faster on all ends, it still will load slower. To make things worse, every once in awhile the game will just lock for 5 seconds, and then get back going again. I haven't been able to figure out what is going on at all so I want to see if you guys have some ideas in addition to mine.

1) My HD is hurting, or has been damaged somehow, I need a proggy to take a look at it, know any good ones?
2) I'm going to run a defrag right now to see if that clears some things up.
3) Memtest it tonight and see if I get any errors, figure it could be something in that realm.
4) That nForce2 IDE controller is actually slowing things down.

Thanks.

What kind of HD do you have? Each manufacturer makes a specific (and very good) tool to diagnose the HD at the lowest level...

D'oh, its amazing how much stuff I forget. It's a Maxtor 60gb, 7200rpm 8mb cache one, I'll go get that after the defrag is done. It was pretty fragged so this should help a bit.

Maybe you need a NEW POWER SUPPLY :grumble:

Is your vid card the same on both? Is the RAM in both PC's the same? Also, I had read somewhere that games get really hammered by an un-defragged HD...you may be onto something. Also I find Norton turns itself on sometimes- is your virus scan interfering?

If it makes you feel any better I found all Unreal games except the first UT reaaaaally bogged down on loading...

PPS is UT2K4 worth the money? UT was my favorite game for a while, so I am tempted to go for it, but I only have a P4 1.5, 512 MB SDRAM, 128MB Radeon 9200. Think my PC can keep up? Thanks in advance.

Do you have the preload player skins thing off in the settings of UT2k4? Also, are you overclocking any?

lol Prime, I promise I'll come get it!!

Everything is faster in the computer thats running slower, so I don't think thats the problem. It also doesn't have any virus scanner on it (I run it over the network). The defrag was needed badly, so we'll see if that helps. The memory in it has been kind of funny before though, and I'm wondering if it is slightly unstable, memtest tonight.

Pre-Cache is turned off too, and I'm not doing any overclocking on that system.

Ran powermax and so far no problems with the quick test, the long test is going as we speak.

I think UT2K4 is worth the money though, esp since its $40. Very fun, and even the single player can be entertaining.

Well, nothing in powermax, full memtest running right now. If thats not it, I guess I could do a back to back test with that Nvidia IDE controller on and off. Anyone ever check the performance on that before?

it might be worthwhile to clear out your temporary files before defragging. did you look for spyware or any other crazy thing running in the background?

Did that and I have no spyware running, I'm always on top of that with scans every other day or so.

Dear God, memtest takes far too long. With that I shut it off on the last test and go play UT.
