[How-To] 2xNIC 1PC Inet Access

edited May 2004 in Science & Tech
Ok i'll try and explain the setup and what im trying to achieve the best i can.

current setup

Starting at the;

router
IP: 192.168.1.1
Sub: 255.255.255.0

Machine 1) (2xNIC's)
NIC 1
IP: 192.168.1.2
Sub: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

NIC2
IP: ???
Sub: ???
Gateway: ???

Machine 2
IP: ???
Sub: ???
Gateway: ???

Ok now what i want to do is connect "Machine 2" to "machine 1's 2nd NIC", giving machine 2 internet access, which of course would come from the router, through machine 1.

Can this be done, if so would address would be needed for this to work in above description.

Thanks

    What type of cable do you have between the 2 PCs? You will need a crossover cable. There are 2 basic types: Patch and crossover. You will need the crossover between the 2 PCs.

    Also I think you will need to setup internet connection sharing for this to work. What OSs do you have?

    woops sorry, yes a straight through cable from NIC1 to Router, a Cross-over between NIC2 and PC 2.

    Os will be XP PRO

    Can I ask why you are setting it up this way? Why not connect both computers to the router?

    I think since you already have a router that you should just go get the cheapest hub you can find. Some 4 port $30 job should do the trick. Multihoming a PC is a pain in the A$$...trust me.

    Or you could do like I have my network setup.

    Modem ----> 4 port router
    > 8 port switch

    Just hook a crossover cable from the router to the switch.

    The best part was that I got my switch for free after rebates from newegg, so it was teh win all around.

    IF PC1 is running XP Pro, you could do this or a network bridge with USB to USB if both are running XP, but it is terribly insecure. Router will protect better, or Linux. Linux can hang out as a gateway box, it is a PITA to do this in Windows unless you internet connection share in XP while XP is the box connected to modem and other computer, but then if the sharing box is compromised BOTH boxes could be open to a world's worth of hackers.

    The switch idea is much better, the hub doable if router can secure things ok or well.
