Video over 802.11b?
Vicodin
Chicago
Okay, here's the scenario:
Currently I stream video/audio from a 9200aiw to my home theater by using traditional RCA cable. It works fine but I have cables running across my dining room.
So I'm looking around in my spare parts bin and I realize I have enough things to build another pc.
Here is the question, though.
If I throw together a bare bones pc, pop in a wireless NIC and tuck it into my stereo cabinet could I stream the audio/video from my fileserver box wirelessly?
I don't think I would need too much processing power or ram, essentially I would just toss XP on there - strip out all the extraneous nonsense and load up codecs and power dvd.
proc/ram size/etc spec suggestions welcome.
Is 802.11b have enough bandwidth for what I'm trying to do?
Not sure this is the right forum, I apologize if it isn't.
Thanks.
Fold on.

You don't need a wireless router or anything, you can run the whole thing over an ad-hoc network using 2 wireless nics. Just be warned that wood (along with everything else) tends to but a damper on 2.4 GHz transmissions so if you've a heavy wood cabinet as well as several that might be beyond the limits of a low-end card. Try and find the highest power wireless PCI card you can in your price range.
I'd love to test the hypothesis, but only one of my computers is running an ATi card (a 9700p AIW) all the others are NVidia or Intel (the lappies)
YOU'RE going to try it?
You are NOT to benefit from MY questions.
Hrumph.
(smile)
I'm going to try it too.
Much thanks all... I'll let you know how it works.
