Server 2003 woes..

I installed Windows Server 2003 on my backup computer because I want to learn more about how to use it, etc.. and because MS sent me a copy so I want to put it to use. The system it is running on is.

K7S5A
1700+
512 pc133 SDRAM
Radeon 7000 64 mb
40gb hard drive

It was running fine, but I cannot find any video drivers for it, and now it locks up and I get BSOD'S about the video and all. I set it to default vga and all but still errors. Now it is stuck on the "Windows is starting up" screen.

With this hardware, I was running windows 2000 just fine but now I get all this crap. Should I just put together a new system to run server 2k3? Or just go with ram for now?

This is my first time using 2k3 so if you have used it before or anything, please give me some input.

Ain't used before, but did you try an XP driver with it, for video??? It might even take a 2000 Pro driver in backward compatibility. It is a server core made to work well with XP, that is why I say this might work.

To solve problem meanwhile, see if it has a repair console accessible from CD, like XP does. Roll back if can from that, then get an XP driver and try that. PROBABLY if you installed a DX9 driver that is logical place for breakage given what you have, servers run more basic DX (prob DX 8.1b) and it is not a gaming-right-on-that-box-its-on O\S by nature.

I installed direct x, not 9 though. I tried the XP drivers from the ati website but it was a no-go. It finally just crashed, so I put XP pro on it just to get it back up and running. I lost my copy of advanced server 2000 so I will go back to windows 2000 tommorow.

I think it might be the ram holding me back, but I don't have any more ram to put in it. I might just have to build a new box. I googled it and saw on other sites where people were having trouble with the K7S5A as well, so it might just be a motherboard issue with ram and server2k3. I will do some more digging up to see what I can find.

Well, server O\Ss tend to like real good ram. They are desinged for boxes with ECC and sometimes ECC Registered RAM depending on drivers-- and if not, the RAM has to be matched timing usually as the timings for the storage they need to have to be used to full effectiveness need to be tighter as they tend on real servers to need REAL good reliability. The K7S5A as a brand was the best SIS chipset board for consumer boxes in the time it was mfr'd, but it was not a server board. While you can learn on it, you will not find it stable for a real advanced server O\S of REAL recent kind. 2000 server will work for learning, 2003 probably not on that motherboard.

BUT, that motherboard could fold decently... :)

I have a K7S5A and some PC133 laying around here. I think there is a 2k3 CD in the apartment as well. I could always try installing it to see if it gives me any trouble. I dont have that Video card tho which it seems like that might be your problem.

I used a similiar setup. mine was a k7s5a pro, 1900+, 9000 pro 512 pc3200. I couldnt find a driver for the sound that worked. Also the graphic menu that loads didnt work for the motherboard drivers so I loaded them from device manager. But other than that it worked fine for me.

Not sure if you saw this info base article from ATI. The only ATI drivers available for W2K3 servers come from Microsoft and only support RAGE XL products.

    http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4227.html

Also you mentioned W2K, are we talking Pro or one of the flavors of Server?

If you ran W2K server, I don't believe you should have any specific problems running it on the rest of your hardware (sans video card). Performance may be impacted but I do believe it should run.

I do have a couple of blown up Intel PC's running W2K3 server here at the college so if you need some specifics on hardware, etc... I should be able to provide it.
