My Dad builds VERY detailed model trains. He buys rust colored paints and modifys them to suit his needs. He has a paint color that mimics a steam burn on cast iron! LOL! You can get rust colored paints at most good hobby stores. With a little creativeness, you can modify your base rust colors with other colors to get the effect you want.
Also, most good hobby stores will now carry texturing paints also. You can get wrinkle and crackle finishes. Again, a little imagination goes a long way.
That is one real labor of love! Hope he doesn't get a new favorite game soon.
As for the rust paint. There is a 2 part system called Rust All. It is used in building models, the guys building military stuff use it a lot, or to make a model look weathered.. Pretty easy to use, and not a lot of learning curve to it.

That is one sick mod! I'm more of a "right brain" type so for me case modding is adding a lighted fan. It's amazing what these folks can come up with.
