temperatures

Ok I have questions on the temps for the opterons and athlon 64's.

With the older XP line we always used 60 degrees as a redline danger zone and some instability might show itself earlier but we based this on the differance in the temps we got from the thermister temp things under the socket as AMD said to expect an approx 30 degree differance in the thermister measured temp and the real core temp. And AMD said 90 was the danger about to fry a chip temp using the diode temps of the core.

So has anything changed with the new lline of chips? Are they reading the real core temp with a diode or using a thermister? I'm getting temps in the 40's for both my boards. The opteron and the athlon 64. But are these off the core or measured under the socket and has the danger zone for the chips changed? They seem to use less voltage and seem to run cooler but I've been to lazy to go to AMD's site and read up since the temps looked so good. So whats the skinny on the new chips? Whats a dangerous temp and how are they being measured?

Tex

Whats the code on the core. This is a pic for some 32-bit athlons so I am not sure if its still the same with 64s.

I don't think it works the same. There isnt a tiny raised core like the XP's. A lot of surface space like a xeon and I'm not pulling a machine apart and scraping off all that AS5 to read the writing on the top. (grin)

What XP had a 70 degree max anyway? A mobile version or something? With the old 30 degree differance that would be a XP that was maxing out at around 40 degrees at full temp measured through a thermister? Was that a real chip?

It was just a thought. Didnt know if you knew the stepping of it or not.

I know the XPs are all like 85C or 90C.

There is a bigger raised core if you take the heatspeader off, Tex.:) I wouldnt either.;)

Its fun to watch peoples faces the first time you hand them one. They weigh a ton more then an XP. Everyones mouth just drops open and they go "Wow".

    Here's for the 64's : http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/30430.pdf

Still looks like 70C on both of em
