can i even do this? in xp, you don't have an option to change the screensaver password ... and i don't have a password on this account, no need for it really. but i do want a password on my screensaver to keep unwanted people (read: my brother) off it without prior permission. anyone have any suggestions?

You have to have an account password and set it to: "Show welcome screen [on something or rather]" on the screensaver screen, I believe.

well there's an option for "On resume, password protect" but that will probably use my account pwd ... if there isn't one you can just hit OK and your back to the desktop. so you don't think it's possible to do?

No AFAIK but you could get a special screensaver that will do it. What's to prevent your brother from restarting the computer and logging in?

The only REASONABLE way I know is all three of these at once
    Locked case
    BIOS boot and setup password
    Screensaver with password.

Note, there is no reason the BIOS and screensaver passwords have to be DIFFERENT! :D

amend John's suggestion by using TweakUI (Powertoy) to setup Autologon.

How does that work without having to enter a user account password (Thread Title)???? There are third party screensavers that require passwords. So, lets say that someone does the three finger salute to the keyboard, twice,, and gets a restart. At that point, BIOS will want a password to let booting even continue.

Now, Doofus the hacker\intruder of local sort wants to get past BIOS being passworded, but if sides of case are locked on, how does this local hacker RESET the CMOS????

Never mind the power button, BIOS will not boot to O\S without a password this way, so no O\S harm of any further sort can be done unless someone sticks in a floppy or CD, but BIOS password protects from THAT also. That is why this threesome works against the son of one of my business partners, who has a computer of his own and wants to use his Daddy's faster one and now CAN'T after having messed it up very majorly 5 times in 6 months.

lol john, poor kid gets outsmarted :p but, just to correct you, double ctrl-alt-deleting doesn't reboot on xp ... just opens another task man, though i suppose there'sa setting for that somewhere...

Or... XP lets you pswd individual folders. Password your account, pswd all folders and set up a user account that can only access minesweeper...that'll fix his little red wagon.

-->Right-click on any folders you want to protect in Windows Explorer and click "sharing and Security", etc...

Or break one of his fingers every time you catch him.
