ATI's Filtering Methods Explained

EliteBastards recently put up an article looking at ATI's texture filtering methods, particularly on the new Radeon X800 GPU's. Check it out if you haven't already.
Texture filtering is something that could have a whole article written about it all on its own - It isn't a particularly simple concept to explain. So, without trying to go too in-depth into this topic, I'll outline why texture filtering is required, followed by how the main different types of filtering work in theory before talking about its function in the context of how an application or developer specifies what filtering is used to give a brief overview of what happens when. In other words - 'Here comes the science bit'
