After many a news item following the development and preparation of ATI's latest effort in the world of graphics processing, we finally bring you the news that ATI's new line of cards are primed and ready to go. The news agency Reuters looks at the launch in more detail.
ATI's newest line of chips has been designed to incorporate the PCI Express standard, while Nvidia has opted to use a bridge between the old and new standards.

The result, Orton said, is ATI technology that "shows off the full capabilities of PCI Express, and it won't burden the technologies from a cost or power standpoint." That means more bandwidth, or bigger "pipes" to carry data, and power management, the company says.

Keep in mind that today's GPUs don’t use more GB/s than what AGP 8X can handle.

If it's cheaper (by more than 10-20 bucks) than that's great. Although if the GPU itself doesn’t actually need more throughput than what AGP8X could handle, then it wont do anything more than get us (the end users) to upgrade our mobos sooner rather than later (and prematurely).

Nothing in the world of technology is "Premature." PCI Express needs to happen now because there are a great many traffic jams on existing PCI busses with things such as SCSI controllers, GbE network controllers, RAID controllers, etcetera.

Since bandwidth is a growing necessity in an aging architecture, it only makes sence that they begin to debut video cards on the PCIEx platform to kickstart the drive.
