broadband stops rsponding

edited June 2004 in Science & Tech
ok i seem to to have this problem for the last few days.

i have a usb adsl sagem Fast@800-840 my service provider is Tiscali, latley i have found that my connection stops responding.

When i'm looking through web pages it works fine even when i'm downloading, but the problem arrises when i leave the pc running and it's downloading or uploading, and i either go out or go to bed.

The green arrow says i'm still connected but i cannot accsess any pages and my downloads or uploads have stopped, i have to then reboot and connect again, and then it works.

If someone could help with this i would be very grateful and thanks to anyone in advance who can.
sandy

Have you spoken to Tiscali?? :)

There are a couple of likely issues, either it's the model locking up (which Ive seen them do) or it's a problem at Tiscali's end (exchange linecard fault or routing problems).

Call them first and see if they can nail anything :)

What lights do you have on your modem? also what lights are solid, and which are blinking when you loose connection? We sell a Zoom USB modem to customers who do not have a nic, but no problems with them so far ( knock on wood ) I ditto what Shorty said, call the ISP first to make sure it isn't their end. I would also try the modem on a different usb port as well.

How old is the PC its connected to? :)

Some older mobo chipsets don't play nicely with USB ADSL modems, eg.. the evil Alcatel frog shaped monster.

I have also seen computers that USB modems do not like front usb connectors. Mostly Gateway machines, do you have the modem plugged into the front or the back?

I noticed from your hijackthis log that you're running a bittorrent client...if you don't run bittorrent, do you still have the troubles? I know my modem/router combo cannot handle all of the connections that bittorrent creates. I was having the exact same symptoms until I figured that out.

Don't know yet, have dropped my total of peer's able to connect, that didn't make much differance, shall log of there tonight and see what happens,
so how did you overcome it?

the problem with bittorrent is that its sneaky about how much of your network it uses. true, it may be limiting itself to Soandso download speed and Soandso upload speed, but at the same time every torrent you're running is opening connection after connection trying to find more peers and seeds. so while you may only have 3 peers connected to you at any time, you're still going to be looking for more

    right?

    I don't use bittorrent anymore :)

Other methods of obtaining....bible music....are out as well, unless it's late at night, as our dsl is about 512/128...guh.

btw, to get a quick estimate of how many people are connected to you, or you are connected to, goto run->cmd. Then type "netstat -n" (no quotes), and this will list all the IPs that are connected.
