Music MAKING Software?

Hey! My friend recently showed me a really cool program where you can make songs from scratch note by note and choose all the different instruments... Unfortunately he's gone and I don't remember the name of the proggy.

What kinda programs like I described are out there?

I just think it would fun to make some songs from all the beats I always have going through my head :D

    Fruityloops, Acid Pro. Those two programs come to mind.

    Though those two programs may not satisfy your inquiry.
