will Opteron 8xx (8-way) chips work in a Tyan 2-way board?

edited June 2004 in Hardware
I want to get a pair of Opteron 8xx chips
(max 8-way) to use *some* day in a quad board,
but to use right *now* in a dual board,
the Thunder K8W (S2885 / S2885ANRF).
I've seen eBay 8xx sellers claim that this works.
A Tyan-USA support-rep says it won't.
A Tyan-Taiwan rep says it will.
Maybe the USA guys are just giving me
the "party line", maybe to sell quad boards.
Why would an 8-way chip work in a quad board and
not in a dual board?I want to get a pair of Opteron 8xx chips

I wouldn't recommend buy 8-way processors as they are MONSTER money...

    http://www.pricewatch.com/1/3/6015-1.htm

    $1300! Each!

Forget that, that's not worth it for how long they will be "top of the tree"...

Id be more prudent to get a a pair of 248's, a dual board (like the TYAN) and build a very tidy rig.

    http://castle.pricewatch.com/search/searchmc.idq?cr=Opteron+248&qc="OPTERON"*+AND+"248"*+AND+@ctd+3&i=3&ct=Computer&c=Microprocessors+PC&mi=N&m=N

248's are half the price... and have resale value for when the next round of Opteron releases appear ;)

Processors are constantly moving forward, as are boards... you'd be puttng yourself in huge hock for those dual 848's... when they will quickly become "generation before last".. and you will kick yourself time and time again...

I second what Shorty said. Overbuying CPU is a MASSIVE waste of money. CPUs typically drop in price every3 months or so.

Just buy what you need now and upgrade later, when what you really want is a lot cheaper!

Actualy on ebay they usually have had the 800 series sell for the same price as a brand new 200 series in the same speed from newegg.

The problem I see in his idea goes like this....... You will see very VERY few retail quad opteron MB's. Maybe one or two. MAYBE. These are destined for OEM servers from Compaq, IBM, HP etc.... How many quad Xeon boards can you name today that are not OEM'd from Dell, HP, Intel etc... No market. 99 percent of the people buying a quad cpu wants a package froma reputable manufacturer with serious warranty. No one wants to roll their own.

And the second part is he hopes to "one day" get one of these. And when "One Day" gets here the current round of 8 way opterons for sale will be much cheaper used then also and may not even work in the new quad board that becomes availalble later anyway.

So my vote is if you can locate them on eBay for what you were budgeting for 200 series optertons anyway then go for it. Its not like you got raped on the deal even if you never get the dream quad board. But if your paying retail then I think its a big big mistake.

They have had new 848's which were the fastest ones made at the time sell on eBay for what a 248 was selling for at Newegg at the current time. And you pay a huge premium with opterons that are the current fastest just like you do with any processor.

I paid like $250 for my PAIR of 240 opterons. But I have seen several 842's and 844's sell for around $220 a pop.

Another opinion heard from someone that has just built a dual 248/S2885 system: GO FOR THE 248"S!

Especially since AMD intends to release dual core Opterons that are supposed to work in the existing dual boards, effectively giving you a quad processor system by the end of next year. Don't waste the money on 8XX series chips.

    Just my $.02.
