Why is my internet crawling?!

Ok, so usually I get download speeds of 2.8 megabits / second ... and lately it's been down to 2. But, when opening my homepage (it's Google no less!) it takes at LEAST 3 or 4 seconds. When i try opening Short-Media, or any other site, it takes forever. Like, dialup forever. So could this be a virus / spyware issue, ISP issue, or router/modem issue? No one is downloading anything in the house so I have no idea whats going on.

Go to a speed test site, like dslreports or www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest, and see what you get.

If it's way slower than you think you should be getting, download HijackThis from our downloads section and then run it and post a log here, it could be spyware.

it could be any of those things you listed above. it could also be a cat-5 cable going bad, or more likely a cat-5 that a dog or a cat has gotten to

TheBaron - it's happening to all the comps .. i will try going straight thru to the modem to test, though.
Prime - I used this site, because my 3 times on bandwidthplace was used up .. such a stupid idea really ... http://speedtest.tds.net/speedtest/ (note: this is 1-2 hours from my house so it should be even faster than farther placed ones)
I wasn't doing anything, not downloading, not even playing music and this is what i got. Your download speed : 1250357 bps, or 1221 kbps.
    A 152.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 673627 bps, or 657 kbps.
GAH! my upload is twice as fast as normal and my download is less than half! here's a HJT log anyhow

OK, I've narrowed it down to the router. I didn't think it coudl be, so i didnt' bother before, but it is. I've replaced the cable from router to modem, and it's slow. I went straight to modem, and it's very very fast again. I also rebooted the router. Do you think it could be on its' way out or is it just overheating?

As with all electronic devices, routers get quirky when overheating.

My WRT54G stopped routing packets to the WAN when it was 93*F in my house the other day, though it was perfectly fine LAN side.

I turned it off for 10 minutes, put a house fan on it, and turned it back on. It was fine there on out.

Yep, I unplugged it, threw my brother's Tornado over it and it works wondyful now;D
So, seeing as how Geeky1 just put heatsinks on his (router? modem? forget which) do you think I should do this? I have an old K6-2 sitting around and that heatsink oughta work, but how do I keep it on? Do i need thermal paste?

If you're going to open up the router then you'd want a thermal adhesive (This is like a thermal paste but it makes things stick ... permanently). The proble, is that inside the router it might not be the biggest chip that's overheating ... it could be some small sub-processor, buffer or something that's overheating. A simple fan rigged up to blow across it would probably be the best idea.

Your our router was dropping once in awhile I think because of the heat. Propped it up next to a PSU and I turned the PSU on with a wire trick.

From time to time I have same latency problems here, on Comcast. But, in this case it is often only when new wide-spread viruses are hitting in volume and the router is dang busy rejecting virus and bot connect\detect attempts (It has quite a few port block rules programmed into it). Latency to get to sites is high, sites are slow to normal after that.

Constant, like in your case, is most likely heat or a router or computer in a dampish place with the spring wires that connect to cable, in ports, being corroded over time or the cable end brass contacts in cable connector being corroded where they meet the finger\wires in ports-- careful use of contact cleaner on cleaning swab works to restore that problem to good connection (normally, will do this cleaning with computer and router off). Arctic Silver has available a two-part Thermal Adhesive that you mix like epoxy, this is only for permanently holding HS's on. Even a thermal double-stick adhesive pad would work, but the thermal adhesive will be more effective at getting heat out of the chip and into the HS.
