It has been reported that Microsoft is still on track to offer an anti-virus product that will compete against similar products offered by companies like Symantec.
Asked if that would hurt sales of competing products, such as Network Associates' McAfee and Symantec's Norton family of products, Nash said that Microsoft said it would sell its anti-virus program as a separate product from Windows.

Expect that product to be similar to RAV Antivirus for Windows, and closely related to RAVAntivirus as it used to exist. Microsoft bought GeCAD's AV Technology outright, and has contracted with more than one of the former devs of that software to work developing it. If you want to confirm this sale, it is on the front page of http://www.ravantivirus.com if that URL reg is still current, and Google has this cached if not. They have been working on this for about .65 years now after sale completion.

The old MSAV from way back when was heavily based on purchased technology also, Central Pacific Software was the name of the company that sold that to them.
