Computer shuts down during Windows XP installation

edited June 2004 in Hardware
OK this is starting to upset me. My computer has been turning itself off, as in it cuts the power off and i have to turn the power supply off then back on to get it to turn on again. I thought originally that it was completely random, but its starting to do it at certain times, for example : when logging off of Final Fantasy 11, and when selecting a partition to install Windows XP onto.

The history computer:

1.) The first version of the computer died when the cpu fried, killing the mobo as well.

2.) Almost all components are new with the exception of a hard drive and sound card and cables.

The computer :

1 Maxtor 40 gig hdd
1 Maxtor 200 gig hdd
NF7-S mobo
Athlon XP 2500+ : cooled by an OCZ Gladiator 3
Samsung PC 3200 - 512mb
Radeon 9700 Pro
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
Asus 48x cd burner
Demon 480W power supply

Originally I thought it was the power supply but when i swapped them out they give the same results. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Your issue may be heat related. Have you checked your cpu temps to make sure they are at acceptable levels

is your 512MB Ram in the form of 2 X256 sticks. if so I would also try removing one stick to see if this could be a memory issue. I have seen this happen when trying to install XP before. If i am not mistaking during the install of Windows in general there is 1 file that when installed will use "ALL" available RAM on your system. I had a box i was working on about a year or so ago shutdown during an xp install and it continued to do so when trying again. I pulled the first stick of ram out of it and issue was resolved.

    check the cpu temps.

    cpu temp = 40C,
after 20 passes in memtest no errors were found

    any other ideas?

Random reboots like this are usually one of two things. First is cpu temp and second is power supply related. Do you have a motherboard monitoring program to check your voltages to see if they are taking a dip? Also, check the cpu temp with the same program. If those don't solve your problem, use memtest to check your ram, one stick at a time as suggested above.

If it's not ram or heat, it may be either PSU or CPU. Since memtest works, I propose that you have a faulty PSU.

well the thing is this, i've tried 2 different power supplies on this, and one i just bought. both yeild the same results. The only thing I havent looked at is the chip. I might end up smacking Armo into playing with it with me.

unplug the new 2o0gb drive. Power and ide cable.

Pull the turtle beach also. I know it sounds like its power or something but just for kicks disable any devices not needed to boot inside the bios also. No parrallel, serial, usb, lan or anything else.

Try and install one more time. But make sure you do a full not a quick chkdsk on that drive before starting that too.

a loser is you Armo, the best thing we did out of that was install a new pc speaker, from the siren coming from the board we have determined it is an overheating problem.
