extra RAM

edited June 2004 in Hardware
Hello guys,

Would it make a big difference when I am using 1 gb ram on my laptop instead of 512 ram? I am using lot's programs a the same time but not always are they very heavy. I have a new dell 510m with a pentium m 1,7 ghz, 512 ram.

hope you can help me..

Girardo

I forgot to say that I sometimes get this message in SPSS (statistical program): "insufficient memory to process the command"

Depends on the type of programs. If Photoshop with some large pictures, games, video and/or sound editing, then you'll want the 1GB. If it's just regular programs like a crap load of IE windows, mp3 player, office, and stuff like I doubt you'll need it. What's your normal memory usage?

Check the memory usage when you get the error. The program could be buggy (memory leak?).

Seems like what you're doing would benefit from having that extra 512MB of RAM. Be careful, though - if you've got 2x256MB memory sticks in that Dell, chances are one of them is behind the screen and it will be difficult to upgrade it. If you ordered Dell's option of having 1 512MB stick they usually put that one behind the screen and leave the memory bay that's accessible open for you to upgrade with.
