Hanging every 30-60 minutes. overheat problem?

edited June 2004 in Hardware
120 GB HD, 850 MHz Athlon Thunderbird, TNT2 graphics, onboard soundcard, 383 MB RAM. Windows XP Professional.

My problem is thus:
Every 30-60 minutes, my computer hangs. No warning, doesn't coincide with the launching of any programs, no BSOD, just freezes completely. I thought it might be an overheating problem (it still could be) but I monitored my motherboard and processor temps, and they never rose above 95' F (for the proc) and 80' F (for the mobo) over an hour span of time, until the computer hung. Another interesting thing is that my heatsink isn't hot at all. I touched it just after I shut down and unplugged, and there was no heat coming out of it. It was cool to the touch. My processor is also cool to the touch immediately after shut down. Any ideas?

What are your voltages? If you have a hardware monitor installed post a screenie of it. Or even better, if you have a multimeter post the voltages of the 3.3, 5, and 12 v rails.

    Are you overclocking at all?

Don't be surprised that your heatsink and processor are cool. They lose their heat very quickly, even immediately after shutdown.

do you have a spare hard drive? install an os on it to see if it's a hardware problem or not. better yet, why don't you download one of those linux live image cds that boot into the os from a cd so that you don't have to install anything and see if it still freezes after an hour or not, then you'll know for sure if it's hardware or software related. my money is on windows acting up.
