at my work we have a wireless network but our router cant handle the load. Its a Linksys and they say maximum of 36 we need to have 50-60 computers on wireless. I was thinking of taking a access point and using a old computer with server and dhcp to do ip's would that work, or how should I run it?

    Two options I would consider:

    1) A better router
    2) Splitting the clients amongst 2 routers. Give 25-30 of them access to one WAP, and 25-30 acess to the other. Then bridge the WAPs via a cable.

you can try running multiple routers, on different channels. Also most wireless cards give you an option for selecting which router to use.

    1. configure your routers with different ssid's. Example config router 1 with ssid of yourcompanyrouter1, yourcompanyrouter2, etc..

    2. put each router on a different channel. Most routers do 1 through 11

    3. Configure blocks of users wireless cards to use ssid yourcompanyrouter1 channel 1

    4. have each router assign out ip addresses..

Only draw back is if the user passes out of range of his router he will not be picked up by one of the other routers.

Also on a far easier note... wireless routers can have overlapping zones. just put them on different channels. Just make sure that they are not assigning out the same ip addresses. It all depends on how your office is laid out.

If you want more information let me know. I can email more specific details...
I used to manage a large scale wireless system. It was not for pc access but for hand held inventory devices that worked real time with a server. We had 12 access points covering 2 buildings on a wireless A network (this was before b and g were readily available) we had it configured where we could pass through zones, however we did use static ip addresses on the handheld devices. You have options and what you ask can be done with little or no headaches... But it may require a visit to each machine...

tip, if you use multiple APs or routers, you're best to use channels 1, 6, and/or 11. If you don't spread it out (five channels apart) they could overlap/interfere.

You could look at something like the WS2000 from Symbol. That will easily handle the load from 50+ users. The AP gets set up in a central location, then you just buy the access ports seperately and install them where you need the coverage. The access ports run power over ethernet, so it is a very easy install. Security is also top notch.
