Windows XP shells and shell extensions?

I've been thinking about seeing what shell mods I can get my hands on and try out for Windows XP, you know just basic things like perhaps some additional toolbars, stuff like that.
Where's the best place to go for all my shelling needs? and what's the best program to use?
When it comes to cosmetic modding of an OS, I'm a real newbie. Any info, advice and links would be great.
