HowTO really restore CDs....

You can use a CD restorer, in the form of a big machine or a little one. I use a little one, called a SkipDR M.D. Silly thing really works.... It is electric, and I opted for the electric version because of even rotation of wheel and cd movement.

It makes RADIAL VERY shallow grooves (not quite a flat micro-grind), and it does grind a tiny thickness of surface OFF the CD data area, and this is deliberate.

You use it over a beach towel or large towel folded double or quadruple thick, here's why-- you use lots of ionically almost pure distilled water to mist onto CD as the SkipDr is rotating and micro-grinding it, too little water and the fine grinding surface on wheel gets clogged with PLASTIC particles (and once clogged, it is ruined basically, you will never get bonded plastic off the tiny abrasive surface of the wheel, toss and replace it instead). Too much, or slight tilt of CD from horizontal, you get lots of water on pants, work table, or floor, with little pieces of plastic in it. When done, you polish CD with a WET microfiber cloth.

About 10 minutes work total for a scratched CD, the XP, 2000, data, or audio CD sounds REAL sweet or does NOT fail to load your O\S at install time. Bascially, you can restore an O\S CD atleast 15 times, 10 if you have REAL deep scratches. When done, BLOT dry-- an artificial polishing Chamois will blot it fine.

The hand SkipDR ones work, but you almost need a helper to keep misting water while you hold with one hand, crank with other. If you want to be lone SUCCESSFUL and FAST CD restorer on block, get an electric one.

This is hardware, talking about the cleaning process more than what is cleaned.... :D

I'm glad you made this thread, because I've always wanted to try one of those but never wanted to waste money if it didn't work... I have a very large game collection + 2 young boys + grubby hands + dropped disks == lots of scratched games.
