Yahoo Mail and Gmail invites!

edited June 2004 in Science & Tech
Just to let everyone know, if you send an invite to someone with a Yahoo email address, that Yahoo will throw the invite into the bulk mail folder.

I just sent an invite to my relief's Yahoo account to see what would happen, since I'd heard rumors of Yahoo screwing around with Gmail invites and sure enough, Yahoo put it into the bulk mail folder instead of the inbox. It didn't give any problems using the invite to get his new Gmail account but is something to warn anyone who is sending an invite to someone with a yahoo account to look for.

doesn't understand how the others think they can make a go of it when the almighty Microsoft (keto genuflects) didn't seem to make a go of it....tho he admits he doesn't use Hotmail and is not fully up to speed on the issue
Occupied. Or is it preoccupied? Icrontian

The e-mail is the candy to lead the people to their little scheme. They wrap a lot of things (ads, sponsored services, bundled thingamajigs) around this free e-mail. The 1 gig is a publicity stunt (as is the mail reading, since even bad buzz is buzz nonetheless).

i can vouch for that, and if i wasn't alerted to check my Yahoo bulk folder i probably would've deleted the whole folder without checking.

maxanon, i have not seen one ad yet and i've purposely used key words to invoke them!

I think they're waiting to increase usage, then they're going to sucker-punch everyone with ads out the wazoo.

It's like a radio station that's just starting up: They begin by giving you 55 minutes of music every hour. People like it and listen to the radio station because there's no commercials. Then, once people are hooked, the radio station gradually increases ad content until you have to listen to 30 minutes of commercials to get 20 minutes of music.

Personally, I think GHoosdum is wrong on this one. Maybe I'm just a Google fanboy, but I have more faith in the company than that (more specifically, the 2 or 3 people that control the company). They're not short-sighted enough to do things that will obviously drive users away. The fact that the ads on Google have not proliferated despite their market dominance is a good indication of this, I think.

Publicity and money - yes, of course. That's what any company wants generate. At the same time, though, I think Google has a loftier vision and that some of their motivation for doing things is that they need to be done.

Matt, I really really hope I am wrong.

Oh, and as an update for the record: My Gmail invite came to my Yahoo Inbox, not the Bulk folder.

I think they must be testing their system. The thing about google is that they're always playing around with systems. So, I'm sure that they're testing out their service and perhaps privately capturing ads and their context. Also, advertisers may be a little wary and want a proof of concept.

Ghoosdum, when did you receive your invite? Was it before I first posted this thread? Because I was sitting not 2 feet from my relief's computer when he received the invite and we found the invite in his bulk mail folder. Actually, he has his computer networked through mine via ICS to get his computer online. :D If your invite was sent to you before I posted this, then maybe yahoo had changed their policy between the time you had received the invite and the time my relief received his.

No, it was long after. That's why I posted it as an update.

I think Yahoo may have gotten complaints about the invites showing up as Bulk Mail, and they changed the policy to put them in the Inbox, perhaps. That's just a guess.

keto sent me the invite, and warned me about it maybe showing up as Bulk Mail, and I remembered this thread. That's why I posted here - I was actually surprised that it showed up in my Inbox.

I think that's right. When I recieved mine in the bulk mail folder I clicked the little "Not Spam" button. A lot of that, and complaints probably made the invites go straight to the inbox.
