relation to sp2 - how the hell did you install it? it keeps giving me some error saying atapi.sys is in use...so i searched and people said it was because of Daemon Tools, so I uninstalled it and i still get the error ... is this it's so-called anti-piracy protection?

No the copy protect forces activation.

Atapi.sys is usually a cdrom. Burning software or you're playing a cd maybe?

Something is accessind and IDE cdrom to be getting this error. Could be packet writing software. Million things I guess, but it is cd related.

No cd in the drive, d-tools uninstalled...I'd really rather not have to go and uninstall EVERY cd application I have...:-/ I hope there's a solution somewhere

Have you gone into Task Manager and shut down all of the unnecessary stuff? You could also go through your services and temporarily disable all but the essentials.

Try temporarily renaming atapi.sys to something else (like atapi.sy_). Reboot and see if that makes a difference.

Don't forget to change it back to .sys when you're done. :)

Hm, well apparently one person actually deleted the file, installed sp2rc2 and rebooted. I guess Windows automatically makes a new one? So I'll try yours in a bit. Kinda had it with rc2 for today lol.

    no dont do that :D
i had that exact same problem with the older version that spinner posted awhile back - apparently that version was removed from the windows update site

however, theres a newer version of sp2 that was put up on V5 and was downloaded as a critical update. worked just fine

a word to the wise - the new firewall is extremely unstable, and i'd wager the antivirus is as well

SP2 doesnt provide anti-virus. It merely tries to detect if you have anti-virus installed, and if it does not see anything it warns you... how dangerous it is not to have some form of anti-virus.

I install sp2, reboot and immediatley disable the firewall as its a pain in the rump roast for networked PC's but may be fine for a standalone. I can't say as I just disable the sucker and then tell the new security advisor to basicaly "bite me" and not monitor crap for me anymore. it is not wanted or needed and I have no more probs in that area.

Have you got any CD drive emulation software installed?
