What is it?

How difficult is it to setup an Exchange Server?

What kind of min hardware do you think is neccessary?

Forgive my ignorance.

Fold on.

Exchange is, without a doubt, one of the most bloated pieces of crap that I have ever had the displeasure to work with. We have installed and managed Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 on multiple servers for a variety of clients. I can tell you from firsthand experience that it sucks.

RAM? AT LEAST A GIG. If you give it a gig, it will take up 900mb... If you give it 2gb, it will eat 1.7gb.

Anything less than a gig will crawl like a snail over sandpaper laced with tabasco sauce.

Difficult? You'd better go out right now and spend $60 on one of those "Mastering Exchange Server blah blah blah" books from Sybex or Synergy Press or SAMS.

It is needlessly difficult to manage, and remember that it ties inextricably with Active Directory, so if you are not familiar with Active Directory, you'd better buy a book on that too.

Can you tell how much I like exchange? Ask -tk for some horror stories.

I have had limited experience with Merak Mailserver, but it seems like it might be a viable and less costly alternative.

    www.merakmailserver.com

I have one client that uses it and it seems pretty cool. The management interface is 10,000,000,000x better than exchange, that's for sure...
