Battlefield 1942 problems

Originally my game would just freeze my WHOLE system, forcing me to hard reboot every time. It would happen randomly, and it only seems to happen in BF42.

Well now it just doesn't start up anymore... when I open the game, my monitor will click and turn black( it stays on), then after 30 seconds it will click back to windows with an error. I reinstalled the game, the latest patch, and Desert Combat, but the same thing continues to happen.

Any ideas? I want to reformat, but that is too much of a hassle right now.

Sounds like graphic drivers. I had a similar problem. Are you Nvidia or ATI? Post your 'puters specs. Suspect Nvidia. Lots of fun with the GeForce4 moving to the new generation drivers.

Are you fully patched with BF1942? Are you running the DC mod?

If you've got an ATi card, there seems to be some recent problems where in games, the monitor would go into standby mode. ATi still has no fix and doesn't even acknowledge it.

Does this happen in their newer cards like the x800? If so, then I will go back to NVIDIA and tell them to kiss my arse.

did a clean install of both drivers, then the whole game. It just won't start up, black screen, then crash to desktop.

I think it's happening with 9500's and up. I haven't had the problem yet.

I would be curious what the error window said... I got a lot of crashes playing Unreal II that had lots of gibberish (to me, anyway) in the message, but seemed to be a memory issue. NEVER crash playing BF1942.

O a related note, I installed Secret Weapons of WWII and my BF multiplayer game went bonkers- "invalid CD key", "unable to connect"... I had to re-install, without SWWWII. No loss, single-player side hummed anyway, and no multiplayer that I could find. Oh well at least I only spent $15 CDN on it...

I am having the same problem. It happens with BF1942 and all of the other mods. I am not sure if my dad installed some new drivers or if it is a problem with the card. I am using a Radeon 9700.

Is this issue only with the newer v4.6 catalysts? I'm running v4.5 and BF1942 and DC works fine for me. BTW I'm running a 9700 Pro. (Built by ATi)

I have ALWAYS had the freezing issues with BattleField 1942 ever since I got my Radeon 9700 Pro.. but at the time it was also happening in several other 3D games. I have run several different types of drivers, from Omega to the Catilyst Drivers.

In my original post, I was running the 4.5's from Omega. The problem with teh game no longer working at all was becuase I had hard rrebooted so many times SOMETHING got fuxxored badly, becuase I had reinstalled the game and drivers a few times and it never worked again.

Since then I have reformatted, and reinstalled the game, and am about to test it out.

I truely do not think any of this is driver related, maybe it is the game itself.

I am scared to hell to say this... but it seems that after the reformat(AND YES I HAVE REFORMATTED GOD KNOWS HOW MANY TIMES) hehe, it has yet to crash(KNOCKS ON WOOD). It's been a couple days, me playing on and off for no more than an hour at a time though...

    //PLEA TO THE GAMING GOD'S

"PLEASE! Please please please don't start crashing Desert Combat now that I have spoken of the non-crashing! I BEG THEE!

I had occasional freezing issues with my TI4200, I'm using my Radeon 9800 Pro right now, I've never had any problems on Battlefield 1942, Road to Rome, Battlefield Vietnam, or any of their mods.

I had similar trouble when i was using ATI's rate fix program at the resolution the game was running. It would go to a black screen and then nothing. Everything else worked at the resolution (1024x768) but BF just didnt like it. When i disabled the program it worked like a charm.

hehe, I run at 1600x1200 with everything in the game and in my driver control panel cranked up, with the exception of AA which is only at 2xAA... I don't like it any higher or lower.

My system rocks, it still hasn't crashed, but I haven't played a whole lot either.

Now that I see the dates here, I am thinking this was one of my problems I originally had with SP2 for XP. After my reformat and using a new slipstreamed disk many of those problems were fixed. But I also bought a new Graphics Card sometime ago. I have a horrible memory....

Looks really nice and I love the game but I won't have my hopes up. They overhyped BF:V and it pretty much sucked IMHO. Was nothing like the original. Only reassurance I have is that supposedly the old developer (Sweden) is making BF2 (I think Dice Montreal or Toronto made Vietnam).
  • edited January 2005
I'll side with blackhawk on this one. BF:V was definitely overhyped and didn't quite deliver on the promises although it had some good points to it. I hope BF2 is great, I do look forward to it coming out although I won't hold my breath on it.

When it does come out, everyone should begin practicing their helicopter dodging techniques NOW before BH gets his copy.

Glad to see some opinions on BFV- I am tempted to buy it but it doesn't seem to have the same panache BF1942 does. A guy I work with say s tat I should spend my money on Counterstrike 2...
  • edited January 2005
I would agree that it doesn't have the same panache as BF42. I dunno if I'd spend my money on counter strike 2 though. Look at Joint Operations if you like those types of games. Joint Ops is quite a good buy in my opinion. Another one to consider is Far Cry but there are differing opinions on that one.

I didn't like Joint Ops that much. It's just a BHD'ed BFV. When I first got into a chopper I almost cried at how crappy the controls were. You have to be pretty careful before getting into battles. Infact, when I played MP I hardly saw any battle but that could be cause of the map. Shooting is pretty realistic. Anyways, I'd try the demo before going out and buying it. Don't even think about Soldner. That thing sucked so much it's not funny.

Overally opinion about games right now for me is that your better off just "trying" them for like a week and getting rid of them. Games with good replay value are pretty rare. :shakehead Gaming industry has gone to the crapper. Bring back the Sega and SNES days.

    /end rant

Yes, soldner sucked so bad I had to laugh too.

Did you patch it? There's a bit of a problem with unpatch versions and refresh rates other than 60hz.

I think the best thing to do is to do a clean install of drivers, Video, Via and Sound card to.
