Anybody tried Suse 9.1 64 bit edition?

Morning All,

I've just installed Suse 9.1 32 bit on my lappy and for a complete Linux noob like me it seems really good. So I'm now nearly ready to install the 64 bit edition on my main rig. Has anybody here tried it & if so what are your thoughts. I'll probably try doing it as dual boot install with Windows 64 bit edition.

Also, is it just me or are all linux installs from cd/dvd really flakey? In the past I've also done installs of Redhat & Fedora and all including my latest Suse install ran in to problems despite me checking the disks/downloads for errors. The errors were usually random ones where it couldn't read/find certain files and so it would take a number of goes before I'd end up with a working install.

    Update:

Ok I've now installed SuSE 9.1 Pro 64bit edition & I gotta say initial impressions are that it's the mutt's nuts. The install was absolutely trouble free, much better than windows 32 or 64 editions. I didn't have to go looking for any drivers or such like, it did it all and it looks beautiful. I did turn off my raid array just to make things easier for it and installed it on the same disk as my Win 64 installation so that it now dual boots on that disk, but I'm seriously impressed.

On a side note I think that the problems I had with my 32 bit installation were down to either a dodgy dvd drive on my laptop or it didn't like the dvd media I burnt the iso to. There were no problems with this installation.

Suse didn't use to have free downloads has that changed? I have tried a couple 64bit versions of linux but my expensive raid controller drivers have just been fubar'd untill the latest 2.6 kernel's, Couldn't keep the OS up more then a few days if it was on the raid controller. LSI was patching liek crazy and their were tons of Linux patchs but.... And it all revol;ved around the AMD64 bit versions of linux. The 32bit driver was fine.

I'm about ready to give it one more shot here. (grin)

Some versions are free from an ftp install. Other can be found elsewhere I believe. :)

Yep I already found that and have a cd coming. Wasnt real sure if it just let you boot and run froma cd or actually bot and install but I ordered it a couple days ago. Suse is one of the only current certified Oracle platforms and they used to have some convoluted, but free, install from the web only version but no downloads available.

That's a full installer DVD. Not the live evaluation CD :)

NO -- but I have the CD for MANDRAKE 10.0 AMD64 edition due to arrive 8-2-04. See it at linuxcentral.com -- can get for $12 US plus shipping.

Let you know how it goes. I have no Linux experience, but you can buy a subscription for automatic updates from Mandrake that I HOPE will be easy and like MS's Windows Updates.

    Will update later.

I did go with the Mandrake 10.
0 for AMD64 bit -- it is nice and works well except for not having drivers for some of my printers (same probelm with Windows XP Pro 64bit Beta) - But DO NOT spend money on Mandrake Club or online update -- they don't work or are EXTREMELY slow -- got refund it was so bad.

If you can't get what you want free -- use someone like www.LinuxCentral.com who will sell you CD's for a small free -- many only 1 or 2.95 - some multidisk sets are a little more -- but if you are burning iso's to your blanks anyway -- not really a bad deal -- esp since Mandrake club stuff had MANY MD5 errors!!!!!!!!!

Using the Linux Central stuff allowd things to go well!

Also - now have on another HD - the Windows 64bit XP Pro beta mentioned above -- It works all basic stuff including my Canon i860 printer using a BJC8000 driver - two other printers and other hardware will not work --

So the Gigabyte GA _K8N-Pro I am using here with 3200+ Amd Athlon 64 boots to one of 3 OS's by chacnging boot order

1.Pair of 250gig Maxtor SATA drives in Mirror Array running 32 Win XP Pro
    2. 120 gig ATA133 Maxtor ide running The Beta 64 Windows
    3. 100 gig ATA Western Digital ATA100 IDE running Mandrake Linux 10.0 - 64bit

I have a Suse disk not installed -- may play with 'someday'.

I've tried Mandrake 10.0 RC1 AMD 64, but I found out that there are nobody building rpm packages, and the dependecies are so missy when you use both amd64 and i386 packages.

i am currently downloading suse 9.2 pro 64bit edition, it is the trial off novells site, just want to know whether this will expire or can i just keep using it without support? please let me know so i can decide if its worth continuing with the download, 17 hours left. suse is pretty easy to use i understand and installing stuff is simpler so is right up my alley, thankyou.

    Jim:

Alakazam over 'there' just installed Suse 9.1 64 bit and says much the same as you - he's well impressed with it.

I hear that Suse will release 9.2 and then that's the end of the freebies, they're going all Red Hat/Fedora.
