Floppy Drive not reading

I have a laptop which I use for work, and all of a sudden the floppy drive has stopped reading disks.
Does anyone have any ideas what it might be, before I splash out on getting it fixed.

Cheers

And you can't format a disk and copy stuff to it right?

The blasted thing seems to be working again, although it does make a lot of noise, like a rubbing sound? Maybe its not very well?

If it's under warranty let the manufacturer fix it. If not, and you are comfortable taking it out and disassembling it you might have a look inside and see if there is a foreign object inside.

Other than that there's not much you can do for a FDD...

I was also going to suggest looking inside or holding it up with the door open and shake it to see if stuff falls out. A friend of mine had similiar probs and found his two sweet kiddies were putting pieces of their "pop tarts" in the slot for example.
