XP doesnt shutdown at 1st try...smss.exe error

edited June 2004 in Hardware
Hi, ever here about this one?
I try to shutdown XP home ed. and it seems like it starts to shutdown but then it beeps and nothing happens. Sometimes I get an SMSS.EXE error and send the report but no info on it comes back. Othertimes the "shutting down app" comes on trying to shutdown SMSS.EXE and then the error. Othertimes, no error messages. But it always shutsdown on the 2nd attempt.

I took down the list of apps that turn off after the second attempt and tried shutdown after closing each but it doesnt help. When I tried SMSS.EXE it said cannot close app...critical system process.

What is going on?

Thanks for the support :Canflag:

SMSS.exe is the session manager. Do you use Terminal Services? SMSS.exe could be in use either because you've got an open session on another PC, or something is logged in to your PC. I'm not certain, but I think a few of the virus programs run that way. It could also be a security vulnerability if you're not patched up to the most recent versions of all of Microsoft's Critical Updates.
