Hi y'all,
I have an abit KX7 with 512Mb 2700RAM. At the moment I'm using a 1.4GHz Athlon but would like to upgradeit. What is the fastest CPU I can put in here?
I have had the motherboard about 18 months, Would I need to upgrade the Bios as well?

bothered.

You can go up to an AXP 2600+

    Version: B6 Released Date: 2002-08-22

Support Athlon XP 2400+, 2600+ CPU. Please be noted that Athlon XP 2400+ and 2600+ CPU need AMD certified heatsink; otherwise, the system will be quite unstable or even fail to boot up.

ahh, youll have to "right click. save as" and put it somewhere, its a self extracting archive ... run it, and some new files should a ppear in the same folder, these are the bios/ flash utility, just copy them to a floppy, reboot into DOS and run runme.bat, that should sort you out ... I cant test this particular one as i dont have the same board, but there should be an option somewhere to save your current bios ... always a good idea

thats the most recent revision of the bios.
if you dont like doing bios flashes in dos, abit has released a new painless windows bios flash utility

    ftp://ftp.abit.com.tw/pub/download/fae/flashmenu120.exe

try that , hit one click install and your board will then support some of the newest AXP's

those bartons, can they run at 166FSBs with DDR 400 modules?
or do i have to set the FSB to 200?

That depends on whether or not your motherboard allows the FSB to be set at a different speed than the memory. When running the FSB and memory at different speeds this is called asynchronous.

The processor would have no problem with the memory running @ DD400 while the FSB is DDR333.

If you have a motherboard that supports adjusting the multiplier of the CPU, then running the CPU @ DDR400 FSB speeds should be fairly easy.

the mobo u mean must be the nforce2s right? (asynchronous and multiplier adjusting)

i went to a couple of websites to look for barton and ddr400 capability with non nforce mobos, most of them said to buy "recommended ddr400 modules" (certain brands i forgot). would these recommended modules be able to run with ddr 400 speeds without ocing to fsb 200?

Well, right now, yes, nForce2 is the chipset to get because the KT600 chipset-based boards are not available, or are not available in a wide selection.

from the benchmarks I've seen the nForce2 boards are still faster than the KT600 boards, but it's normally neck-and-neck so I guess it would mainly depend on price, features and reliability.
