Microsoft and Apple are searching for the same thing with their next operating systems: a better way to find stuff on an increasingly cluttered hard drive. It's no real news this, but it sure does illustrate the fact that the role of the modern day computer is changing significantly in comparison to when operating systems such as Windows XP were first released. Digital photography being one thing that has played a large part in the increased desire for an easier method of organisation and acquiring.
"We're filling those drives with a lot of contact information, calendar information, tons of e-mail and our photos, music and videos," Phil Schiller, a senior vice president at Apple, said in an interview. "Increasingly, it's getting difficult to find the info we want and find in all these increasingly varied file formats."

I like how companies believe that all people do on their computers is "E-Mail family and friends! Share pictures, movies, and music with the click of a button! It's simple!"

I keep my drives fairly well organized, but have even considered (gasp) turning on the Indexing Service. If it weren't for thumbnails I'd probaly give up on my pictures...

i cant ever get the thumbnails to cooperate. it probably has something to do with having several different filetypes in one folder. either way, im not especially a happy windows user. its "useful" features all seem like junk to me
