The Network Information Service is Sun Microsystems' "Yellow pages" server-client protocol. It used to be called Yellow Pages, that is, but British Telecom made them change it. Now it's called NIS, but all the command still start with YP.

It allows intra-network distribution of configuration data like users, hostnames and most other useful things in a computer network.

It's like a directory service, like novell or active directory, except it's older and simpler.
