Dude, this is a bad situation. I have experienced this problem twice, and in all my years of tech support, I have not found a solution to this. I spent hours and days scouring google, scouring the web, scouring support forums and digging through microsoft technet and knowledebase. I never found a single fix for this problem. In the end, I had to reformat the drives, which really really sucks.

Now, with that said, there is a guy out there who claims he has a program that can do it. His site is jrtwine.com. He has a very arrogant attitude and he seems like kind of a kook (read his rant about the trialware software thing on his "news" section) and his prices are absolutely insane. HOWEVER, I have an associate swear that his software worked. He had the same issue, and he bought the $100 or $250 version of whatever, and he claims it worked. So, I'm not sure if the problem is worth that much money, and I can't personally attest that this software works, but there you have it. Take it for what it's worth. Don't torture yourself looking for a fix. I TRIED EVERYTHING. Read my trials here.

A friend of mine told me something about windows not being able to edit or delete files/folders with characters it couldn't understand in the filename, and DOS having characters that windows couldn't understand. Maybe you can do it from DOS? Not like a command prompt that windows has but like starting up with an old boot disk and loading DOS.

Sometimes when I want to delete large files in windows it says it's in use or something, even after I make sure it's not. At that point, I use a little program I got somewhere a while ago, don't remember now. If not, I write myself a .bat file. That always does the trick for me. I know it's not quite the same problem, just trying to help.

There is no DOS for Win 2000/XP - if the volume is formatted NTFS, DOS will do no good.
