About every 1 min. my cursor has an hour glass

About every min. my cursor has an hourglass. I don't think this is normal but it might be. Does anyone know what's going on and what I can do?

Run HijackThis! and post the log here. If something nasty is running behind your back it will probably find it. :)

OK, you have some nasties in that HJT log, plus several toolbars which I would thin out if I were you. Go to this page here and download both Ad Aware 6 and Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3. Then install and update both as described in this sticky thread here. Run both programs and let them do their thing, then post up another HJT log to see what is left to clean out. :)

All right, first you need to move HijackThis to a folder that is easy to find such as C:\HJT or c:\HijackThis in case you need to restore some setting that will be backed up by HJT. Then, boot up in safe mode with system restore turned off and remove the following items:

After removing these, reboot with a normal startup and run HJT again to see if we got it all. If it looksd like we've wiped it, then you will make a fresh restore point. :)

How do I turn off system restore and boot up in SAFE MODE? thanks :)
  • edited July 2004
Nevermind about system restore :P. But how do you boot up in SAFE MODE?
  • edited July 2004
When you go to reboot and right after the machine comes to the initial bios screen, start tapping on the F8 key and it will bring up a menu where you can choose which way to boot up. :)
  • edited July 2004
Muddocker, do you have a Screen name of any kind? It could make things a lot easier :) . Ok rebooting into safe mode now

Ok, to get to safe mode, I'm gonna have to give you a whole set of steps:

First, we need to get to the boot menu, which XP SP1a with security packs tends to sometimes kinda hide. The key to use at boot time, before you even see the windows screen with the moving blue thing saying it is loading (and the faster the box is running, the harder this is to time), is F8.

So, tell Windows to restart with shutdown computer, then restart choice AFTER you find the F8 key on your keyboard. And as soon as the computer starts showing text screens, once a second (not constantly, but tap F8 once a second or so) tap F8 key. Probably a bunch of keys have F plus a number on them at top of keyboard in a special row across top or in two columns to left (depends on how old keyboard is and what layout you have). Find the F8 key, then-- tell Windows to restart. Then tap the F8 key once a second when the computer starts showing you stuff.

Now, you will see one of two things-- either you will see a screen with a bunch of listings, including the 'Safe Mode' (NOT the Safe Mode with Networking one) option, OR you will see a screen with a Windows XP entry on top and a whole line and a half of text with Press F8.... in it. IF you see this last thing with F8 in it, press F8. If not, skip to next paragraph.

In either case, you will now have a screen with a bunch of options, inclusing Safe Mode. Use up and down arrow keys until that entry is highlighted (text will be black on white background when that is so). down arrow moves down through options, up arrow moves up and the entries will wrap from bottom to top if you press too many down arrow keys, adn from top to bottom if you press too many up arrow keys, Press one at a time and see what gets highlighted until you get the right option highlighted\inverse colored looking from rest of screen.

Once that is so, press Enter key twice, and wait, this will take a while and you will see some weird stuff that is actually telling you what XP is loading, then have a pause, then a black screen, then a white arrow (mouse driver just got loaded), then eventually a screen that looks like a black desktop with a box telling you that you are in safe mode. Click OK or press Enter key on keyboard, then XP will load up fully in safe mode.

To run HJT, you get to find it, remember where you put it or search in Start|Search for Hijack this.exe and when you get a result like that DOUBLE-CLICK that result (this tells windows to run that program right from the search window). Oh, for absolute new folks, double-click is clicking mouse left button twice rapidly. IF you manage to just get the program name to change color (get highlighted), the Enter key will run it for you, XP might yell, tell it you want the thing to really run by clicking Ok or Yes.

Run HJT, save log once done and after rerunning HJT, then post here if still problems, OK??

Once you have resaved the log (please remember or write down where it is or name it something special), use Start|shutdown|restart, this time let Windows choose how to start by itself.

Once Windows comes back up (restarts), you can find and open the file in NotePad or wordpad, and stick log in this thread as a post along with a note about what now works or is still acting up.

I tried to make this hyper simple, if I am telling thread starter more than he\she needs ot know, then others might not know, and this is also a printable HowTo thing for anyone stuck on doing this restart to safe mode step that sees this post-- for XP Home or Pro, even if OEM'd, and some of you with 2000 Pro will also be able to adapt this easily to your box's reactions to what you do, it can use F8 this way also. Basically, I wrote for a total newbie while understanding each person will know some or almost all or all of this. This is for the ones that do NOT know, or want keyboard equivs to some mouse actions.

I'm curious...does anyone know about this line below??? Just finished cleaning alot of stuff put in my computer and I know that this "lycos" was one of my biggest problems. They installed all kinds of programs in my computer, without my knowledge, most likely due to using Kazaa. Should it be deleted too?
