Dell Laptop Power Supply: Broken Plug

edited July 2004 in Hardware
I've broken the plugs on both of my Dell power supplies. (I have a Dell
Latitude CPi notebook - yep, old and worth very little.)

Does anyone know where I can source some new plugs? I'm talking about the
gizmo that plugs into the laptop and hangs on the end of the lead from the
power supply.

Dell wants to sell me a new power supply - that will cost more than the
laptop is worth, ie >US$100,

Two repair shops I've visited say that the plugs are unavailable and Dell
fiercely protects the patent on these plugs so there's no after-market. Are
the repair people right?

I guess I could try installing a standard power socket in the laptop in place
of the Dell special and fit a corresponding standard plug to the power supply lead. Has anyone done this?

I'm sure you could find some used power adapters around that would cost you far less than $100. I know that the CPi300/400 adapters are the same as the Lattitude C600/C610 models, and even some of the inspirons, so they are not in short supply.

I saw a few auctions on ebay for less than $20.. May even be cheaper than the plugs :)
