Hi all,

The problem I'm having is windows not shutting down properly, when it reboots it goes through the scandisk routine. This would not be much of a problem except F@h restarts the Wu at 0. :banghead:

My machine:
Abit NF-7 rev.2
Athlon XP-M 2400 (11X200)
Corsair value ram 1-512mb pc3200
9500 pro
ALX-800, TT smartfan 2
Thermaltake Purepower 420w
WD 80gb SE

All drivers are currently up to date, (I tried the older versions also)
AVG, up to date
Spybot, Ad-Aware, clean.
MBM reports that voltages are all good, load temps 47C.
Prime95- 12hrs
Memtest, good (overnite)
WD diag. passed
F@H, 4days then I rebooted.

Sorry for the lenthy post, trying to give the most info I can.

TIA, Tom (Donut)

Are you running normal folding, or a console in a Command prompt window??? IF you run it in a command prompt window, looking like a DOS thing, then use CTRL-C to exit folding before restarting. Otherwise it will take quite a while for Windows to decide to pre-empt it, and if Windows DOES do this then the WU can get started over.

Also try emptying Recycle Bin, defragmenting HD with Disk Defragmenter, then run Scandisk. Things should be better after that, given all you have done as far as tests so far indicate this is a software or drive fragmentation issue where files are in many small parts scattered on HD as opposed to a DAMAGED HD(at a guess what you are running into is a lengthy shutdown or restart lag, possibly you also managed to shut down computer with power switch while folding client was saving its work-- and doing THAT will get you a problem with work starting over now and then, depending on what the client actually managed to save and what exactly it got interrupted in the middle of).

If you are running normal folding, the graphical with a COG icon on right side of taskbar near clock, it is also easiest to tell that to shut down. Right click the cog icon near clock, then tell it quit or exit (whichever is at bottom of choice list)-- THEN RESTART. Windows will restart faster thaqt way, oterhwise it will sit and wait while foldign shuts down when Windows insists it shut down (once again, you can lose work by letting 98 or even XP shut folding down by force.

I run into same thing on 95, 98, 98 SE, Me, 2000, and XP. Windows tries to give the program time to shut down, does not restart until that time has elapsed-- that can be up to a minute or more possibly. ONLY O\S that does NOT do this is Linux. But, in Linux, I also get to tell the folding client to shut down, then restart back in the graphical desktop-- or rebooting or shutting takes a while longer.

Download all Windows 98 updates + Upgrade to Windows 98SE.

    Or;

Do yourself a favor and install Windows XP.

Thanks all, I believe its fixed now.

Sorry for posting in the wrong place originally, thanks for moving me. :)

Folding, I was running the Graphical version, exiting first did help. I forgot to mention that I was running 98SE, (XP going to be purchased when I get back to work). I found the update that Dodo mentioned (linked thru WD website) I had forgotten about it as most of my hardware is to old to need it.

    Done rambling for now.

Thank you very much, you guys are great. :respect:
