IEEE Member Greg Benson is the ultimate weekend warrior. Instead of building something mundane such as a backyard shed or a living-room hutch, Benson spent a Saturday in April building a supercomputer in a school gym.
Most of the world’s supercomputers are housed in giant companies or government research laboratories, making it very difficult for individual researchers to log any time on them. With flash mob supercomputing—a flash mob is a group of strangers organized over the Internet that comes together briefly, acts out a predetermined scenario, and then disperses—researchers can hook up a bunch of computers and run whatever they have to.
