AFAIK you don't change the multipliers on P4's. ;)

][ardOCP has overclocked P4's and some of Kyle's articels show how. Most definitely true that some P4's can OC very well.

All of the P4´s are overclockable to some extent, but only by giving it more fsb. To change the mutliplier, you need an "ES" cpu which are very rare.

To make things worse, some boards doesn´t allow for fsb increasing which make´s wug stuck.

Wug, do you have a 533 fsb cpu or a 800 fsb?

Either way, get a new board.

Look for a board where the CPU base is independent from the AGP and PCI and RAM bases. The reason that ][ardocp used that strategy is that they had a board similar to that to play with. Thus the CPU can be clocked independently from the other major busses.

The 865 chipset is a very good example of a great overclocking board for very little money. Throw in a pair of deasent memory sticks and you have an easy 3.4 gigs on air without any mods at all.

the baord is alright mackanz...it has a fsb..and i can increase it...so its really no biggy...cept i dunno why my folding isnt going sky high...right now the vcore is set at 1.45, and the fsb is 133x19....now i should be able to up the fsb to 150...but i dont have that great of a folding score...what should myy vcore be?

vcore up to 1.55 is no problems, but check the temps just incase.
I think you can throw up that fsb a lot depending on what memory you have there. What type of dividers is it on the board?s
  • WuGgaRoOWuGgaRoO Not in the shower Icrontian

dividers??? what r those...and as of now i have pc2100...do u think thatll screw up my foldability cuz of the crappy ram
  • TheLostSwedeTheLostSwede Trondheim, Norway Icrontian

Lets leave the dividers for now. Just try more fsb, start with 140 and test for stability by running f@h. If the pc can´t boot, just reset the cmos so that the bios goes back to default.
Is there a voltage selection for the memory as well? If so, i think you can see 160 fsb depending on if you also can change the memory timings. Which board is it? Model number?

thats my baord...i tried to oc it before...but i saw little to no improvement

    Allright,

You can safely use exrta voltages for the memory if you wish, 2.8 which is the max is safe and won´t harm them at all.
To get better fsb, i think you might have to do that.

Set dram clock to 133 and start raising the fsb by 5 steps at a time to start with. When you see any instability, go up SLIGHTLY on the vcore to see if it is the cpu or the memory that stops you.

I do think that your memory will stop you before the cpu does, but lets try at least. When you see that the cpu does ok, but the memory don´t, raise the ddr voltage as much as you can which is 2.8V and try more.

Oh, start with the performance set to NORMAL first.

Can you give me the memory timings that you use now?
You can see it in the Advance turn-up settings.

how would i know whether its the cpu or the ram?
  • TheLostSwedeTheLostSwede Trondheim, Norway Icrontian

By going up on the cpu voltage. If still the same, it´s memory.

    grrr....its at
    1.50vcore
    145 fsb
    2.7dram voltage

what the heck is this im at 145 fsb and im already maxed out on vcore?!

are u sure this wont fry my memory...it doesnt have any heatspreaders on it...its crucial pc2100

Dont worry, no chance at all. The WORSt that can happen is a no-boot. If so, just reset cmos.

Just for anyone who read this quote and wants to go and get the 865 chipset. Make sure you get the 865PE version of the board. The others are useless. I'd recommend an abi is7 for $108 at newegg. Btw... i might be selling one very soon, retail and all for around $100 so stay tuned.

Also, Wugaroo, overclocking is a long and complicated process, give mackanz a break you gotta just try stuff out on your own sometimes. You should at least be able to get that memory to 153. Keep troubleshooting and rebooting and etc.

BTW: What's the multipler on your chip and is that a p4 2.53? Also, if you desperately need some help get on aim. My sn is nv7223098

    wug,

I am sure you are at the end of what that ram can take you.
There is a little to much vcore right now for my likings. Until you can get a stick of PC 2700, run everything at default. There is so little to gain right now it isnt worth it. Can you borrow a 2700 stick from someone, just to give it a test? What are the timings on the ram right now except for the cas 3?

    w00t!

Make sure to check the temps. Just in case. Good work!

The next step is to run things at that speed at as low volts as possible. Try to go down on the vcore 1 step at a time and see if you still are stable.

We had a discussion on aim and he's running 1.675 47c @ 2.8. Sounds good to me :X Of course he's only using the stock p4 cooler.
