Gateway Solo 5300, Power - No Boot

edited August 2004 in Hardware
ok,

I have a Gateway Solo 5300 that gets power (the fan makes noise) but will not boot even into BIOS it never even gets started the HD and CD spin for ~1sec then nothing.

Up till yesterday this thing worked fine, now I can sometimes get it to boot if I reboot 17 times or so. Now it is currently not booting at all and before I start to think that I resembles a frizbee I was hoping you could help.

My Guesses: BIOS Batery, Processor, moBoard, HDisk

I have no idea and warranty is expired, really don't want to open the case and fry annything else but really am thinking that I have no other option. Is there a way to 'reset' the laptop through some obscure dance to the laptop gods or am I completely hosed?

Only recent changes to the system are that I installed AOL while waiting for my broadband to be installed (just moved). Cold it be some funky driver or virus that corrupted something.

Anyway Help Please.

Well, if the lappy isnt even postin (ie giving you a bios screen) that doesnt give you a whole lot of options. What I would try doing just for grins is reset the bios. Im not sure how your specific gateway model is, but on many other lappys there is a little plastic covering over a compartment. Unscrew the screws take off the plastic covering and if your lucky the little bios battery wil be right there. If this is not the case just pray your laptop has easy removal of the keyboard because often they are accessible when you remove the keyboard. Once you get access to the battery, take it out then ground it out with something.

btw your not getting anyt beep codes or anything?

    Sorry, been a little buzy.

No Beep codes, no screen flash, fan spins and the Drive light flashes for a second.

Are Laptop BIOS batteries fairly standard? I got to mine and it is connected with wires into a jumper that is plugged to the board. It seems to be glued or velcroed to the board so I don't want to remove it until I have a replacement.

    thanks for your help,

Most of them are standard batteries. Pull it out. Find a replacement. Solder leads onto it. (don't over heat the battery)
Re-install it, get the polarity right, and see if it helps.
