Wireless btwn Desktop & Laptop?

Okay here's a quick question. I'm going off to college so I think I'm getting a laptop in addition to the desktop. The laptop will have wireless and I'd like to connect that way in the dorm (rather than running a cable) but they don't provide it. So I'd like to get a 802.11g PCI card for my desktop and make a network between that and the laptop - is that possible or do I need a WAP? I know I've seen Apples do this via Airport, but that might be different.

its called Adhoc mode. When you are configuring the cards you should see an options that says adhoc. Select that. Its the wireless peer to peer networking.

Yes absolutely possible and should be easy on windows using the internet connection sharing wizard.

That's awesome, I will look more into it when I get the laptop. Adhoc is a good keyword.. I really didn't know how to search for the answer to this simple question. Thanks guys.
