Media Player sucks (and hates me)

Everytime I click any video (and probably audio) link in IE, WMP tries to open it and it crashes every time without fail. MS tells me to install some program, which I did, but to no avail. Currently using WMP 10 beta, but if i go back to 9 it doesn't help at all...any ideas?

Dunno, I am thinking of switching myself.. but I haven't had too much of a good experience with WinAMP either, didn't like the interface, and didn't play my movies properly, always has weird colors and stuff.

out of curiosity, does it do the same thing when attempting to play a file already stored on your hard drive?

Winamp was designed to play music.
WMP was designed to play movies.

People need to stop using toothpicks as can openers if you take my meaning.

Winamp is excellent for music, and Media Player Classic is one of the very best for video.

I agree with Thrax, and it's the only reason I keep WMP. What's so special about Classic, though?
(Oh, and I'm prolly stupid for saying this - but I didn't get the whole toothpick deal... :buck: )

The point of the analogy was that people try to use programs for things they support, but weren't originally designed for. Sure, you could get a can open if you had a few thousand toothpicks, and it'd work eventually.. But wouldn't it be better just to use the can opener?

Movie programs for movies, music programs for music. Try to mix both and you have crap like WMP.

Media Player Classic is special because it has dozens of custom aspect ratio options, direct interfacing with audio codecs (For example, OGG and AC3 directshow filters) which allow you to adjust the volume of specialised streams. If you have dolby digital audio in WMP, you should play that audio with the help of a codec called AC3Filter as it's the best AC3 codec out there. If you're using WMP, though, you can't adjust any of the options for AC3 Filter (There are dozens) because WMP doesn't allow the codec to do anything more than decode.

With media player classic, not only do you get that codec control, plus DVD support, matroska support, OGM support, and the ability to play just about any other A/V format available at the moment. It's exceptional at playing video and supporting various third party codecs and plugins.

Ah, gotcha. So, where can I get mp classic, and is it even possible (yet) to fully uninstall WMP? I thought m$ had it darn well integrated but I don't remember if they were forced to remove it yet...

I use media player 9 for everything, I have winamp as well but rarely bother with it. I have no problems with it at all but I only really play mpegs, mp3s and audio discs.
