Apple Computer has created a fourth-generation iPod that offers a slimmer case, click-wheel navigation and significantly improved battery life.
According to Newsweek magazine, the two new models will offer greater capacity for the same price as the current lineup. A 20GB iPod will sell for $299, while the top-of-the-line 40GB model will retail for $399. Currently, Apple sells a 15GB version for $299, a 20GB version for $399 and a 40GB model for $499.

Yeah, instead of 100 dollars a battery, it's $50.

That's what I figured. Why not simply equip it with size AAA rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries that are universal and relatively cheap? There's no excuse for this battery rip off program that has a high rate of failures, usually soon after the warranty period is up. Scandalous I say...

Just another reason not to buy anything from them. Proprietary ****ing hardware sucks!

Well actually, as I've heard, the nickel metal batteries develop a residue inside that cause them to not be easily recharged to full compaciy . A new Litium Ion Battery really isn't all that expensive anyway. Ipod charges you tons in labor. With the Creative Labs hard drive based mp3 player, there is a removable faceplate that exposes the litium ion battery that can be replaced for $20. Now why doen't Ipod try that!

Because they would lose revenue in repairs. It's not a legitimate excuse IMO. It is/will hurt(ing) them in the long run.

Any MP3 player that doesn't have $50-$100 batteries surpasses the iPod in my book.
