Something Affecting Windows Media and a strange Dummy program...

To give some background, this is what I've noticed happening:

1) In the Open with... dialog box, there's some program called Dummy with the Spybot icon associated with it.

2) Windows Media Player is suddenly missing its target file, and windows takes me to SETUP.exe file as a replacement...however a file search somehow can't seem to find this file (a phantom file?).

3) when I tried to open Media Player via the Open With... function, AVG popped up a warning that the file was infected with a Trojan...the file being setup.exe.

4) Scans with AVG, Spybot, AdAware, and Trendmicro's online scan came up with nothing.

Here's my log:

it doesn't look like you have any more spyware. Chances are, you had a virus or a trojan or a piece of spyware, but a removal got rid of the infection. However, it appears that whatever you had "broke" media player.

What I would do is install Windows 2000 SP4 and then install the latest version of media player (9).

Chances are, you haven't been to windowsupdate.microsoft.com in a while. Go there and install all the critical updates.

Let us know how it goes.

Now, that Dummy application with the Spybot icon is still there, and I noticed in another thread someone mentioning precisely the same thing. What the hay is that thing? I don't want to open it because it seems very suspicious. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I have the same problem- WMP all of the sudden wouldn't work today, co-incidentally after my PC gets infected with some virus...weird. In my Media player folder is a program (don't know if it is new) that has the WMP icon, and the icon for WMP is now something else...that is clever. I'm going to try to re-assign the file type(s).

See, that's what happened to me as well. I imagine the exe file was overwritten by that setup.exe file...which I think is still floating around somewhere on my comp, but heck if I can find it or any of the virus checkers. Now, as I look in my Add/Remove programs section, there's a hotfix for WMP there with an AVG icon associated with...that is 15.2 mb in size, much larger than the actual version I have now. What is this hideous thing anyway? And what is this Dummy program? I don't want to attempt to access it through the Open with... box because...well...that's just asking for trouble! But I so want it gone...

I tried twice to open WMP from it's home folder, not using a shortcut, and nothing. So I started to think that maybe this weenie's virus renamed WMP.exe (or whatever the title is) or deleted it, then installed itelf with that name. After 10 min of renaming the files, I noticed that when I renamed one it added a setup.exe file again. Hmm. I don't know what I did, and maybe it had nothing to do with the problem, but eventually I found the WMP start file so I shortcut'ed that program and now it works. Again...weird. The strangest part of all of it was that the icon changed. That is what made me suspcious.
