The XP1900 cannot be unlocked by joining the bridges with a pencil. I believe it was the older Tbirds that you could do that with.
For the xp1900 you have to fill the pits in between the bridges with some kind of, well, filler. When I did it I used super glue to fill the pits and then a Rear Windshield Defogger repair kit to join the bridges. DJ-Quack wrote a nice little guide on unlocking paliminos. You can find it HERE. It will walk you through the steps.
And as to what unlocking does... well, it unlocks the multiplier on the chip allowing you to drop the Multi and raise the bus speed. I think that about covers all the bases. :p
    Have Fun

connecting certain bridges allows up to unlock the multipliers. so if you want a really high FSB, since you'll probably have to lower the mults to do so, you'll need to unlock your cpu. there are articles all over the web about unlocking XP's, but using pencil lead may not be the best solution

or, you know, just listen to paroxysm

Is Seversphere still around? He made a video of how to unlock a palomino. I used it the first time I unlocked one and it was really helpful. I remember in his sig (this is one of those things that's just hard to forget) that he was the proud owner of smallmonkeydick@hotmail.com. Wonder if he checks it? "D

    Here ya go,WuGgaRoO:

    http://www.vr-zone.com/guides/AMD/AthlonXPUnlock/

Wouldn't hurt to have a microscope around ,and the steady hands of a surgeon.

One caution: Do NOT get ANY conductive material in the "pits"-there's a copper grid exposed in them ,and shorting it out causes the cpu to not function-until you get every bit of it out of those pits.

Make sure they are well sealed up before painting the conductive material over the top of them!

    Speaking from experience here.

    Good Luck,

    ec

I think You should use a rear window defogger repair kit,but that's just because I don't know the answer to your question:confused:

Perhaps someone else here who's tried it may know for sure.

Tbird use pencil first then tape over. Palomino you need conductive fluid from the repair kit or trace pen. There should be a work around for the palomino by which you connect pins on the underside of the chip or do the same thing by means of a wire placed into the two holes of a socket so that when the chip is in it will connect the pins.

www.ocinside.de has guides for how the bridges are set for every multiplier/voltage/fsb setting of tbirds/palo/tbred etc.

don't buy the window crack repair or the tab adhesive. It has to be REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER REPAIR kit. You want the bottle of orange liquid from it.
