Hello,

This is my first post and I'm sure glad I found you. My computer has been a nightmare for the last 2 weeks. My family thinks I should buy a Dell and throw my HP out the window. I probably would if I had the dough to buy a new one. Anyways, I've done the Ad-aware 6 update and scan along with Spybot 1.3 update, scan & fix. Finally I did the hjt scan as you see below.

May you provide a procedure to kill this trojan once and for all? My family would love you as they could finally get to know me again. Totally appreciate your time in advance.

Dan

First of all, you can explain to your family that there is no difference between a dell and an HP or any other OEM computer. They are all exactly the same inside. One isn't better than the other. You have spyware, and you can just as easily get spyware with a dell as you can with an hp.

    Secondly, delete the following:

    1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about_:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about_:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Cox High Speed Internet
    R3 - URLSearchHook: URL Search Hook - {AA460422-2CEF-400f-AA05-F63368E04706} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sh.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADOBE\ACROBAT 5.0\READER\ACTIVEX\ACROIEHELPER.OCX (file missing)

    O3 - Toolbar: PowerBar! - {D6223CBC-A263-4CB1-B35E-1AE40FEF3B3B} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ietoolbar.dll

this one also looks suspicious. If you don't know what this is, delete it:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Marketing Tips Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\Marketing Tips Messenger.exe

Last, instead of using popup stoppers, just use a good browser. Read this and try out an alternative browser such as FireFox.

Let us know how it goes :)

Ok, done all what you said and rebooted. Everything looks like it worked except I still can't install Nortorn Antivirus 2001. Last night I tried to do a scan and got an error stating I had to reinstall so I uninstalled and tried to reinstall last night and got a "fatal exception errror OE has occurred at 0028:DFCEEDDO". I just tried it again and same error. I thought removing this trojan would take care of this but apparently not.

    Any thoughts?

I don't think the NAV install problem is spyware related.

First, check out your memory. Download this, and unzip it. Run install.bat and it will create a bootable floppy. Boot off that floppy and let the test run for all seven tests (until it says Pass:1). It might take an hour or so. If you have ZERO ERRORS, then your memory is good.

Let us know how that goes, and then if your memory is good, we'll try something else.

Ok, no errors for pass 1 and 2. I guess I fell asleep and never noticed it was on pass 2.

    What next?

Perhaps you should try a different AV software. www.grisoft.com makes AVG AntiVirus. The free edition is actually really good. I use it myself at home.

See if you can install AVG, and if it works, why not go with it?

Ok gentlemen it worked! I installed AVG with no problems. Is there any special settings I should activate after install like "Use Outlook Express 5 plugin" or "use heuristic", etc?

Oh, I have insalled firefox and I am pretty impress. It seems to browse a little faster and it is pretty slick. Thank you for that!

Since I am clean now what do you recommend I do on daily/wkly/mo/yrly basis?

I want thank you again so much in assisting me with this. It's now family time! Hippee!!!

One thing I can suggest is that you put your computer to a good use while you use it :) You should join our folding team. We would love to have you stick around
