Seagate Warranties Jump to Five Years

After compressing hard drive warranties to just a year, Seagate is reversing the trend, announcing a heady five-year warranty for its internal desktop and notebook hard drives.
The extended warranty covers drives bought from authorized dealers, says Joe Cousins, Seagate's senior director of Global Channel Marketing. Buyer demands drove the decision, he says. "Our customers are telling us that a one-year warranty isn't satisfying their needs," Cousins says. "We're working to get closer to our customers--and this move is part of that process. Of course, we're also making a statement about the quality and reliability of our products."

    There RMA procedure still sucks. No good having a 5 year waranty if they lose both of the hard drives they're trying to send you! :(

    My RMA experience with Seagate has been 200% greatness, because it was quick, and they sent me a drive TWICE the size as I turned into them. I also think Seagate makes some quality drives and I know they have new bigger and faster drives coming out this fall that will beat both Maxtor and Western Digital to the scene, or atleast I think will beat them. I was worried with my RMA because it said if I didn't pack it exaclty like they told me I would not be eligible for the RMA, but all was good!

    With the 5-year warranty I think they are just copying what Western Digital started, with their Raptor drives. Western Digital set the trend's beginning. I am sure that Maxtor and Wester Digital will kick the warranties back into place on their standard drives again too. I can't say I don't love a 5 year warranty!

    If Seagate is giving a 5 year warrantee, then I know who will get my next hard drive business. :thumbsup:
