Creative and id Software make loud Doom noise

Creative now had rights to work on id software's Doom 3. They are going to implement there Patented EAX Technology for better sound and experience.
CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY and id Software have today announced an agreement, enabling Creative to develop EAX(R) Advanced HD 3D audio for future licences. Additionally, an agreement has been reached allowing for Creative's patented shadowing technique to be used in the Doom 3 engine.

Apparently, Creative will be looking to improve the audio technology in id Software's Doom 3 engine. In CEO of id's Todd Hollenshead's very own words, "we look forward to further enhancing players' audio experience by working with Creative to leverage their EAX Advanced HD technology in the Doom 3 engine."

    I thought that Doom 3's sound was going to be entirely software-driven?

    well, i guess not?

    i bet it is entirely software driven but i guess if you have the hardware, why not use it?

    It is, I guess Creative put down enough cash that id let them do it.

    edit// It looks like this is only for further versions of games using the Doom3 engine, and not the current Doom3 game.

    I thought pretty much every game in the last few years used EAX (X) anyway?
