Windows Update anomalies

Windows update has recently changed their GUI. A new software scanning program must be downloaded and installed in order to use Windows update.

If anyone is experiencing any strange occurences afterwards please post here. EG: NIC connections shutting down, DHCP timeouts, etc.

If its a corp copy with a non -640- PID your stuck as they view them as illegal keys.

Download the sp2 network version and it installs CURRENTLY even with a non-legal key. But MS update blocks further updates. That MAY NOT be your problem though!

Otherwise consider they recommend that sp2 be installed on a clean XP install (I slipstream mine) and that may cause the problem.

nah i have a problem with ascpi.dll or something like that, something thats even active in safemode. i would slipstream it, but i dont care enough for a reformat. my main concern is when this is released to the public it needs to work regardless, else its a largely useless service pack, and a waste of a download for people on dialup especially

Hey MM - I had SP2 RC2 installed and kept getting TCPIP errors. Couldn't locate the source of the errors. M$ Knowledge base was saying the WINS database was corrupted for the error I was getting. Tried doing a clear and reset. Delayed em but they came back. No real problem. Just the errors showing up in the log about every 10-15 minutes or so, but not regular.

Removed SP2 and no more errors. Guess you isolated it to the new update code.

    Tells me a lot anyway.

But you don't have to reformat. Slipstream it and do a "repair" install. All is good.

If you installed sp2 then windows update can no longer be reached at all even manually without having the "auto updates" enabled in the security center thing they added. enable it, then update and make sure the stupid XP firewall is disabled.

I have not yet installed SP2. Proxy is MS Proxy Server not the XP built-in. I will try enabling the auto updates...

Express will only install Critical Updates. Use the Custom Updates to select the other MS Updates.

So each time I want to manually update I need to do a custom install?
