Need help with msmsgs.exe

edited July 2004 in Science & Tech
I have just gotten a new laptop with WinXP Home. Every 30sec.-2min, the little hour glass comes on for about 3-5 seconds. When I got my last computer 1 1/2 years ago with WinXP Home I had the same problem. I disabled messanger services under services and that took care of the problem. I've disabled services on the new laptop, but that hasn't helped the problem. I've read various posts about this problem, and am confused as what to do next. My kids do use Windows Messanger IM chat program, and we have it set not to start up with Windows. Again that doesn't help. We also use the IM chat on our older computer. As soon as I stop the process(msmsgs.exe) in task manager, the process starts back up within a few minutes. While it's stoppped I do not have the little hour glass appear. As soon as it does appear, I see that msmsgs.exe is back in the task manager. So, I'm pretty sure msmsgs.exe is the culprit. How do I get rid of it without deleting the IM chat program? Also, I'm very squeemish about making registry changes. Any help out there, I certainly would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Scarlet
