"Backup" icons showing on desktop - machine gummed up - HELP

Hi, all,

Up until this AM, my machine has been fine. Now today, my PC (Dell 8200) has had several symptoms of what I'm guessing is a bigger problem. They are:

1. "virtual Bouncer" icon on desktop (since removed, icon that is)
2. With every boot of PC, an icon for a 'backup' followed by a series of numbers appears on the desktop
3. Machine VERY VERY slow, with CPU bogging down for some unknown reason.
4. IE quite slow (took a while just to get to this site!)
5. Have run most recent updates of Spybot, Adaware, and Norton anti-virus, with minimal things to fix, and no registry, or other problems.

I don't know what to do. This is incredibly annoying. If anyone can offer assistance I"m listening! Thank you!!!

Mike

To be honest, I don't see anything obvious there. You're not running the latest version of hijackthis, though. Please download the new version from the first link in my sig.

Thats part of the problem -- the system is so gummed up (near constant 100% CPU utilization by lord only knows what) that getting IE to run isa challenge, and then downloading is an 'iffy' proposition at best. So downloading anything is almost a no-go.

What if I just reinstall the OS? Would that help any? I"m getting very frustrated.
