Computer Freezes while Shutting Down or Restarting.

Hi everyone.

Whenever I try to Shutdown or Restart my computer always freezes at the 'Windows is shutting down' or 'Saving your settings' screen.

I have been to a couple of other websites in which 1 site explained about the problems I was having and also how to fix the problem. Basically, they took me to Windows Update and firstly said download any critical updates available (which I did) and secondly it said to download this 'Windows/Restart Fix' thing (can't remember the actual name) and it would fix the problem and so I downloaded it but when I tried installing 'IT' I got an error message saying something like 'The thing cannot be installed as the application does not match your PC'. It said something similar but not exact.

I also went to another forum where 1 person said change the shutting down time in the registry and like a fool I did, from 200000 (I think) to 1000. Still doesn't work.

I'm sorry if the info given sounds 'funny' but my computer hasn't been shutting down or restarting properly for months (something like 3-4 months)

I would be so GRATEFULL to anyone who can help!!!!!!!!!

THANKS

I have never had a power down issue with XP.
    A repair install?????
I don't know. It sounds like a process that won't terminate.
Are you sure that the machine is free from virus and spyware?

Here's a long shot: Is there a disc or media in a removeable media drive?

    Thanks everyone for their advice.

Edcentric, my computer is free of Viruses and Spyware. I know this because I scan my computer with NAV 2004 and Ad-Aware once a week.

Flintstone, When I do shutdown or restart my computer there is usually a CD-ROM in my computer. Do you think that has something to do with it?

    Thanks.
