FCC Deregulates Fiber Optics To Apartments

edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
Local U.S. telephone carriers can build fiber optic networks for high-speed Internet service into residential apartments without having to share the connections with rivals, U.S. regulators ruled Wednesday.
The Federal Communications Commission voted to free fiber networks built to "predominantly" residential buildings from access requirements that apply to existing copper telephone networks. Carriers like Verizon Communications hope to roll out fiber to residential buildings to improve the reach of their high-speed Internet service and better compete against cable companies, which already have made significant inroads into apartment buildings.
